When a grocer opened her small kibada along the busy estate street, she was sure of one thing – the number of people who will see her business are quite high that they will be buying from her enough to sustain.

Faith has been the biggest driver for many micro businesses in terms of sustaining energy to carry on and on…

Faith was actually the reason many started their small enterprise because they believed that there is no way you can put some trading on road side and miss someone to come and buy from you. Atleast you will get something to eat and keep you going.

That was faith and wishes combined together, and for a number of years have sustained trading. And true to it they have never lacked someone somehow come and purchase from them.

That is how many micro businesses are left to faith and wishes for progression.

In the world over 80% population do not understand majority of principalities and forces that yield most of the results they live in.

This is how it goes-

Majority don’t know that majority of diseases in humanity comes from some daily habits which they don’t know about.

Majority don’t know that majority of the products they buy for the first time were sold to them many months ago.

Majority don’t know that majority of relationship they are enjoying were built through interactions they never know where it happened.

And so on and so on and so forth..

Business making is way beyond working for your wishes as the doer of the business. Feels very good to accomplish your wishes, however, would be very important to understand the forces that drives business so that your desires fit in the equation.

The statistics out there is that 70% of micro businesses dies before third birthday. Out of the balance 90% die by Fifth birthday. Only 10% moves on. Meaning the force that drives business growth is never well understood.

I know growing your business is one of those key items in the pack of wishes and faith.

It is very crucial that dynamics of what you believe in change if you are to achieve your wishes.

As I write this letter, main aim is to drive that sense.

Now let me introduce some five key elements to discuss here;

Universe of Business and Value Proposition

Any business that is set to serve customers is set on product or service that can apply to almost all humanity based on their preference.

It therefore means that the universe of your business is the whole planet earth whose current population stand at 8 Billion.

That is where your universe of probable customers starts.

It is no wonder that increasingly the biggest competitor of your small grocer is a multi-national company that came to your country and now are able to connect with almost everyone.

Globalization came to make this even more real – they say world is becoming a global village.

This is a serious reality because the rate at which it is happening is so fast that within 10 years huge leaps are changing.

This calls to challenge you to start defining your world beyond wishing that someone will come and buy from you.

How do you define your universe – start by becoming very clear on the value you are selling to your customers.

Customer awareness is very high and they need businesses that are able to offer personalized services to their unique preference.

This gives birth to value proposition - definitive value that your customer associate with. This is the value that will enlarge your territory and grow your base.

A grocer may decide to say value proposition is selling organic products that can be traced back to the farmer.

Route to Customer and Customer Acquisition  

When you understand the value you want to sell to customer – your wish shift from just desire of seeing someone coming to buy to how can you know where the people with desire to get the value you are selling can be found.

You start fetching information for specific people that you can describe.

Who are those people that are aware about traceability of fresh products and they believe gives them good health?

Your hunting for such specific people leads you to be known by many more people than you have been thinking are available.

Your base starts to push outwards.

Customers opens up more on what specific aspects they would want you improve.

You become employee of customers through working for their value.

Many businesses today are crying foul because some years back they used to make lots and lots of sales. Years later their sales have gone down big time. Remember population on earth is not shrinking- it is increasing and therefore sales were meant to increase instead.

Customer Journey (Operations Processes)

When the customer arrives at your business – is there any predictable process on how he or she will be served.

You go to a hotel – customer takes 3 minutes before anyone has even looked at the place he is seated. There could be all types of excuses. Those excuses holds valid only to you and not to customer.

How saving one minute of one customer can bring you ten more customers.

This happens because the people operating the business have got no guideline of how they should serve customers.

All your internal processes should at all times be geared to make customer convenient and happy.

Starting with a very simple process mapping that helps you understand how you serve customer will start showing some glaring gaps that leaves your customer unhappy.

Business Performance Monitoring and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Review System

As you undertake your business what are the key control points that drives performance.

Operations are based on activities. However, you can never know how you are faring of you don’t have control points that informs you when you vary from normal.

Do you check control points like – number of customers served, unsatisfactory message you receive, how much stock you are holding and many more.

Setting business for growth requires you identify key indicators that will be giving you compass of the direction you are taking.

Level two create system of reviewing those indicators to ensure you are frequently monitoring their progress from the base point you established then against target you created.

This is a bold move. Setting yourself against targets

Sales Infrastructure or Sales System

The most profound reason business was started is to bring revenue. We get revenue through making sales.

Making sales is ensuring customer has been made to decide removing money from pocket and offer to buy.

There is huge power for businesses that have mastered specializing on sales where they are always out to woo prospective customers to buy from them. Ability to remind customers that you are waiting for them.

Many micro business makers have fear to be seen asking for sales. Learning the system to use in your business on itself will make your business grow with more than 50%.
